Glycerin vs hyaluronic acid for dry-feeling skin

Glycerin has the evidence and the price. Hyaluronic acid has the specific job.

What each one is

Glycerin is a small, colorless humectant molecule that pulls water into the top layer of skin and holds it there. Hyaluronic acid is a much larger molecule, a sugar-based polymer that skin already makes on its own, sold in skincare as a humectant that sits closer to the surface and gives a plumper feel. Most people do not need to choose between them, and if you can only keep one on the shelf, make it glycerin. It is cheaper, better studied, and shows up in more formulas that already work. Hyaluronic acid earns its spot for a narrower job: a gel-textured serum whose feel you actually prefer, a layer under makeup that will not pill, or a low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate paired with an occlusive cream on top.

Glycerin, also listed as glycerol, turns up in cleansers, toners, serums and creams, usually at a modest percentage that rarely appears on the label. It is one of the most studied humectants in dermatology, partly because it is cheap enough that almost every formulator has reached for it and partly because its water-holding effect in the stratum corneum, the skin's outermost layer, is well documented. Hyaluronic acid is different chemistry, a glycosaminoglycan built from repeating sugar units that occurs naturally in skin, joints and eyes. In skincare it is listed as hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate, and it comes in a range of molecular weights that change how it behaves once it is on your face.

What the evidence actually shows

Glycerin's evidence base is the stronger of the two, by a wide margin. A 2025 review of basic emollients for xerosis cutis, the clinical term for dry, flaking skin, described how these formulas restore the skin's water-holding and barrier function once that balance breaks down. Glycerin is one of the humectants such reviews cover. A 2008 review focused specifically on glycerol tied its skin-hydrating and barrier-repair effects to the aquaporin-3 water channel, one of the routes water and glycerol move through inside skin cells. That is a well-established mechanism, not a fringe finding.

Hyaluronic acid's evidence is thinner than the marketing around it suggests. A large share of the published research on hyaluronic acid concerns injectable dermal fillers, not topical serums, and the two should never be read as interchangeable. A 2023 review of the molecule's biology describes its role in maintaining tissue hydration throughout the body, which is real and well established, but that is a statement about physiology in general rather than proof that a serum performs the same job on the skin's surface. That gap between what is true of hyaluronic acid in the body and what is proven about a bottle of it is worth sitting with before paying a premium for one.

How they feel on skin and why

The feel difference comes down to molecule size. Glycerin is small enough to move into the upper layers of skin, which is part of why it works and part of why a high concentration on its own can feel tacky in humid weather. Hyaluronic acid molecules are far larger, and even the low molecular weight forms sold as better absorbed stay above the size that can meaningfully cross into skin. Most of what a hyaluronic acid serum does happens at or near the surface, not underneath it.

That surface behavior is exactly why hyaluronic acid became popular in gel serums and under makeup. It forms a light film rather than sinking in, which gives the immediate plump, smooth feel people associate with it, and it layers under liquid foundation without the tackiness glycerin can bring at higher percentages. Sodium hyaluronate, the salt form used in most modern formulas, tends to run smaller than pure hyaluronic acid, and it is usually what a low molecular weight claim on packaging is actually describing.

The humidity question

Humectants pull water toward themselves. In humid air, that water comes from the atmosphere, which is why a humectant-only routine feels fine most of the year in a climate like Jakarta or Manila. In a dry room, especially one running air conditioning or heating, there is little water in the air to pull from, and a humectant can start pulling from the lower layers of your own skin instead. Draelos and Thaman's formulation textbook describes this as the standard reason to pair a humectant with an occlusive ingredient such as petrolatum, shea butter or a silicone, which slows water loss at the surface rather than adding water itself.

This matters more for glycerin at higher concentrations, since it is the more assertive water-puller of the two, but the same logic applies to hyaluronic acid sitting on skin in a dry, air-conditioned bedroom. If your climate stays genuinely humid most of the day, either ingredient alone can be enough. If you spend hours in air conditioning, on a plane or in a heated room somewhere drier, put an occlusive moisturizer on top of either humectant instead of relying on it by itself.

How to read the label

On an ingredient list, look for glycerin or glycerol, and for hyaluronic acid or sodium hyaluronate. Sodium hyaluronate is the salt form and is what most modern formulas actually use. It is not a lesser ingredient, and a product marketed with hyaluronic acid on the front label often contains sodium hyaluronate once you check the back.

Percentage claims printed on the front of a bottle are close to meaningless without context. A serum listing two percent hyaluronic acid with a blend of molecular weights performs differently from another brand's two percent of a single weight, and neither number says where the ingredient sits in the finished formula relative to water, other humectants and any occlusive support. Position in the ingredient list, which is ordered by concentration above one percent, tells you more than a number on the box. Glycerin or hyaluronic acid sitting among the first five ingredients after water is doing real work. Near the bottom of the list, the front-label percentage is decoration.

Who should pick which

If you want one product that does the most for the least money, buy a moisturizer with glycerin listed high on the ingredient panel and stop there. It has the deeper evidence, it costs less, and it works across skin types and climates once you add an occlusive on top in dry air.

Reach for hyaluronic acid specifically when you want the gel texture and the immediate plumped feel, when you are layering under makeup and want to avoid the tackiness glycerin can bring at higher percentages, or when a formula pairs a low molecular weight sodium hyaluronate with ceramides and an occlusive in the same bottle. That combination formula, rather than a plain hyaluronic acid serum used alone, is where the ingredient earns real space on a shelf.

When to stop and see a professional

Neither ingredient is a medical treatment, and dry-feeling skin that cracks, bleeds, itches persistently or spreads is past what a humectant or a moisturizer routine is built to answer. If skin looks inflamed around the same time as a season change or a new product, or if a few weeks of a sensible routine make no visible difference, see a dermatologist or another qualified health professional rather than adding a third serum to the shelf.

Is glycerin or hyaluronic acid better for dry-feeling skin?

Glycerin, for most people. It has the deeper body of research and works well in ordinary moisturizers and cleansers without the layering hyaluronic acid usually needs.

Can you use glycerin and hyaluronic acid together?

Yes. Plenty of moisturizers already combine both, and there is no formulation reason to avoid pairing them. Add an occlusive on top if the air around you runs dry.

Why does hyaluronic acid make my skin feel tight after it dries?

That tight feeling usually means the humectant pulled water to the surface and then had nothing left to hold once the surrounding air went dry. Follow it with a cream that contains an occlusive ingredient instead of using it alone.

Is sodium hyaluronate the same as hyaluronic acid?

It is the salt form of the same molecule and the version most modern formulas actually use. Seeing sodium hyaluronate on a label is not a downgrade from hyaluronic acid.

Does a higher hyaluronic acid percentage on the label mean a better serum?

Not reliably. Molecular weight, the rest of the formula and where it sits in the ingredient list affect how it performs more than the percentage printed on the front of the bottle.
