Dull-looking skin

Dull-looking skin is about the whole face looking flat or tired, not patches of colour. The Uneven-looking tone guide covers marks and patches. Start with moisturising and sunscreen, then add one brightening step if you want one.

01 · A useful starting point

Notice the pattern, not a diagnosis.

  • Skin looks flat or tired in daylight
  • Less sheen than usual, even after a good night's sleep
  • Makeup looks heavy or grey on the surface

03 · A restrained routine

Change one variable at a time.

  1. Keep cleansing gentle so skin does not feel tight.
  2. Use a humectant moisturiser morning and evening.
  3. If you choose vitamin C, use one product in the morning and follow its label.
  4. Use broad-spectrum sunscreen as labelled each morning.

Questions, answered plainly

Before you add another step.

How is dull-looking skin different from uneven tone?

Dullness affects the whole face. Uneven tone is about specific marks or patches. If spots or patches bother you most, read the Uneven-looking tone guide.

Why does my skin look dull even though I moisturise?

Moisturiser helps skin feel comfortable, but dullness is about how evenly the surface catches light. Dry indoor air, thick layers of product and a heavy base can all make skin look flat even when it feels fine. If moisturising alone has not changed the look, keep up daily sunscreen and add one vitamin C product, following its label.

Do I need several brightening products?

No. One brightening product at a time is easier to judge. Stacking several raises the chance of discomfort and makes it hard to tell what helped.
